Why Google needs Orkut?

Ever pondered over this question? In fact i thought Google had already managed to reach out to millions of people all over the globe. But Google being the company that it is, has always come up with very innovative solutions to increase this very reach – i’ll say surf its way into peoples hearts :).

Orkut is a step in this very direction. As of now even though millions of users “google it out”, usually the users are not registered on their site, which essentially means that they do not have sufficient information about the users, their likes and dislikes. Google is hoping to cover this ground with a social networking site like orkut, where they can collect a lot of personal information from the user.

Like Jeremy puts it on his blog – “Rather than try to convince users to start “registering” for Google, why not piggyback on one of the most viral fads going around: a social network application? And, for added effect, make it an invite only system so that you feel special once you’re invited.”

The kind of demographic information that they might be able to collect could be really vital for their marketing folks, and help them in planning and strategizing their future solutions and of course where to position them. Its tempting if you are a marketing guy ;). Something that you would have had to spend a lot on, has been brought directly to your table, without much of an effort.

But the sad part is that not many companies/countries are encouraging “orkutting” these days, many companies have recently blocked access to orkut. Guess Google would have to do something about this, otherwise i am afraid, they are going to lose out on a lot of important information ;).

Unfortunately Orkut has not been as successful as Google has hoped. MySpace is definitely a much bigger player in the social networking space. Even Orkut’s integration with Google is suspect. I keep clicking the “Remember Me” checkbox and it never does it for me.
